Springing into March with Lily Grace

Hello all my friends in Blogland! Mommie said it's a new month and so we had to turn the pages on the calendars to the month of March!

Mommie has some other calendars besides this one, but I like this one!  I could just imagine that was me sitting up on that sled, being pulled by those beautiful big draft horses, feeling the warmth of the sunshine on my face even though there was still snow on the ground and a chill in the air.
But what is that man doing with that bucket?

Mommie said he is pouring the sap from the buckets that were attached to the maple trees into that big container to haul it back to their "sugar house" where they will boil the sap down to make maple syrup. Mommie said it takes a LOT of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup because it has to boil down to the right sugar content and consistency (that's a big word for me, but Mommie's typing this so she could spell it for me). She said that is why real pure Maple Syrup is so expensive to buy, but is sure tastes a lot better than the kind we get in the supermarket that just has maple flavoring added to corn syrup.

But Mommie says if we have to buy the man made stuff in the stores, she prefers Log Cabin syrup because it doesn't have any of that "high fructose corn syrup" in it, because that stuff isn't good for you.
The little tin of "pure Maple Syrup" on the left is something Mommie saved from when she did have some REAL maple syrup from up in Maine, when they used to live up there.

Those are a couple of syrup pitchers above.  Mommie says that if she runs out of maple syrup she can always make some from "scratch", which means she makes it from sugars and maple flavoring and water and vanilla:

Now I am hungry for some pancakes or waffles!
Thanks, Mommie!!

Speaking of "sap",  this squirrel is sitting on a sappy looking pine tree. I asked Mommie if we could tap that tree and get some sap to make syrup, but she said this is the wrong kind of tree. This is a PINE tree, and PINE sap doesn't make MAPLE sap for MAPLE syrup. But she said it does make turpentine! However, we wouldn't want to put turpentine on our waffles!

Maybe that squirrel likes the pine sap to put on his acorns and pine cones that he eats! Ha Ha!

Speaking of pine cones:
One day last week on one of our walks in the woods I saw LOTS of BIG pine cones everywhere!
They fall out of those big pine trees there in the woods.  Some of those pine cones were almost as big as me!

Oh,  and if you look really really close, you can see the beginning of a tiny little wild plum on that branch of the plum tree:

Next time we go to the woods I will check and see if it is any bigger. Mommie said it will grow to be about as big as a grape by early summer.  I can't wait to see them!!

Oh, one day when we were riding in the car I accidentally snapped the button on Mommie's camera and took a picture of her denim shirt that she had in her lap. Isn't it pretty? I love this color of blue, don't you?

Today is kind of cloudy, breezy and cold right now, and so we haven't gone for our walk yet. But we just went outside to look at Still Waters Pond and we could see two Wood Ducks way over there swimming around:

You can't see them in this picture above, so Mommie zoomed in on them and we could see them better:

That one below is just the female duck.  They are very shy, and when we come outside to see them they swim or fly away as soon as they see us. I wish they'd come closer so I could see them better.

Mommie said the month of March is kind of unpredictable. Some days it might be warm and sunny, and other days it might be cloudy and cold, but one thing is for sure, she said it is usually always windy!

She said March has some important dates to remember:
March 14th is the beginning of Daylight Savings time!  She said in the spring we have to "spring ahead" and set our clocks for one hour later, so like at 8:00 it is really 9:00! She said we lose an hour of sleep in the spring, and we get it back in the fall! I don't think I can wait that long to get my sleep caught up!
I hope our bluebirds don't get confused about what time it is!!

Then comes St. Patrick's Day on March 17th:

I don't quite understand all this stuff, but Mommie said it is all just for fun, and we'll talk more about it when it comes!

Mommie says I need to have something green to wear or I might get pinched!
I'd like a pretty dress like that to wear! I wonder where I can find one? I sure don't want to get pinched!!

And then on another day in March is my big brother Scott's birthday:
There's my brother Scott now...he just created that motorcycle last night from some copper wire! He likes to create all kinds of neat stuff from wire, candy wrappers and straw wrappers.  Someday I will show you more of his creations.

He's very talented.

Then on March 20th comes the first day of Spring!
It already feels like spring here in Florida where we live, but still we are waiting for more flowers to bloom and leaves to pop out on the trees and stuff like that. I think our baby bluebirds will be born pretty soon. I hope so! I sure would like to see them!

Well, that about takes care of March! I think March is a happy month, don't you?

I hope you enjoyed this little adventure with me today, looking ahead into March.
I hope you have a happy month of March.
Love,
Lily Grace

  1. Thank you Lily Grace. No spring time feeling here in NY. Usually spring arrives in late May going into June, then July and August is summer. We don't have hot summers (well, usually 2-4 weeks, that's all). Oh and we get real maple syrup here, we don't buy the store brand. We get it from a small town over- called Canisteo, there is a family that makes maple syrup, no additives. Oh, its expensive, but worth it.

Scott is very talented. My son, Liam likes to draw and create things on the computer like video games and cars, he is working towards a degree in Computer Programing (I really have no talent, so I think that is pretty special, smiles).

Thank you for sharing the many happy things going on in your neck of the words, they truly make me smile. Oh, Stephen the Sloth says hi and the George family are very upset now. They saw on the tv some very disturbing news --something about their cousin Curious George being cancelled. They are "monkeying" around and making all kinds of noises. We are trying to quiet them down. I am glad you are getting out and about and seeing the world, grin.

    1. OH NO! Not Curious George? They CAN'T Cancel him too! What is wrong with people? I'm afraid they might try to cancel ME next!! But Mommie says not to worry. She will keep my story going no matter what! Please tell Stephen the Sloth and The George Family I said hello. I want to be their friend and I promise not to cancel them. Your son Liam sounds very smart. I hope he gets his degree and makes lots of great things happen. Maybe he could teach me some things too. Oh, Mommie says you are lucky to have real maple syrup up where you live. It is very hard to find here because it has to come from so far and it is so expensive. But she agrees with you, it is worth it. I hope you get some springtime weather soon, and I also hope you and your nice son and hubby and all your friends the George family and Stephen the Sloth all come down here some time so I can meet you! That would be SO much fun. Bye bye for now. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxoxo

  2. Ooooh, Lily Grace, you're making my mouth water for some 'real' maple syrup! I never knew anyone who made their own; better hang onto that recipe, just in case! To be honest, I'm not real excited about the time change because that means hotter weather. I'll just have to get up earlier in the morning, hmmmm? I think that's the best time of the day, anyhow. Happy Birthday Month to your big brother, Scott! He and I can celebrate our birthdays together in different places. Oh, and I love his copper wire creations. Don't you? Big hugs!

    1. Oh Miss Myra! Is YOUR birthday this month too? Oh how exciting! Seems like a lot of nice people have birthdays in March! I hope you have a happy birthday whenever it is! Mommie said she doesn't like the time change either...wishes they'd leave it alone! I hope you can have some Real Maple Syrup and pancakes or waffles real soon! Yes, if you can't find the real stuff, you can make your own and it tastes really good, Mommie said. She said she used to make that all the time 'cause it costs a lot less than store bought syrup and her kids loved it when they were little. I hope you have a wonderful day! Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo

  3. Lily Grace: We can have a few nice days in March up here. We can also have some snow and cold windy days as well. I don't want to confuse you but the "Spring Forward" means we turn our clocks forward one hour. it usually takes me a long time to get adjusted to the change. My husband and I had some business to take care of downtown today. The sun was shining but the wind was a bit cold. Peace and blessings to you and yours.

    1. Good Morning Miss Quiet Spirit! I think I got the wording confused about the time change. Yes, Mommie said we spring forward one hour, so that right now it is 6:49 am, but when we spring forward it will be 7:49 am, and in the evening it will still be daylight a lot later and I will have to go to bed when it is still light outside! That's confusing to me, but she says after a week or so we get used to it until fall when we fall back and have to figure it all out again. Mommie said she wished they'd just leave the time alone. I am glad you are getting some sunshine these days, but yes, I know about cold wind. That happens here too, but probably not as cold as your wind up north. It is 48 degrees this morning! That is chilly!! I hope you have blessed week too. Mommie said to tell you we are praying for you. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo

  4. How I love real maple syrup, Lily Grace, and luckily, we have some here for waffles and pancakes. The breakfast photo sure made me hungry! March is a full and happy month for me, too, as my birthday falls on March 1. I'll be writing about it in my Friday blog; maybe, Mommie can read it to you and show you the photos. Tell big brother Scott that I wish him a wonderful birthday, too!
    Blessings, little one!

    1. Oh Dear Miss Martha Jane! Mommie said she didn't realize your birthday was March 1st! She said we must wish you a Happy Birthday now, even though it is a few days late. So, here we go: Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Miss Martha Jane, Happy Birthday to you! And Many More!! We will be looking forward to seeing your pictures on Friday! I hope you did something fun to celebrate your birthday! And yes, I will tell Scott Happy Birthday too. His comes in a few weeks. Thank you for visiting. Oh, I hope you have some pancakes or waffles real soon and enjoy that REAL Maple syrup! Bye bye for now, Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo

  5. I bet we will see you in a pretty green dress soon! It's nice that we are having a little more cool weather, I though our Florida summer weather had returned already after the last few days. I am not looking forward to the time change, it always messes me up! Happy March :)

    1. Good Morning Miss Martha! Mommie said I may have to borrow Margie Doll's pretty dotted swiss green and white dress for St. Patrick's day as she doesn't think she'll be able to do any shopping or sewing between now and then. That's okay. Margie Doll says no one has ever pinched her so she should be fine wearing something else that day. She doesn't leave the house like I do! Yes, we are having cooler weather too. Mommie says it is 48 degrees right now this minute! That's pretty chilly, but she said it will warm up today more than it did yesterday. I am already confused about the time change. I don't want to lose an hour of sleep! I can't wait until fall to find it again! Hope you have a happy day today. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxo
