It's Blueberry Time!

Guess what?!  It's Blueberry Picking time here where we live! Looky looky!! Mommie and Daddy turned into "Blueberry Run" street and we went to get some fresh blueberries!

I said, "Mommie, The sign says U-Pick Here Blueberries!  Does that mean we are going to pick our own blueberries?"
Mommie said that she thinks they also sell them by the pound, already picked, and if so, that is what we will do today.

We met this nice lady there, and yes, she sold us some blueberries already picked so we didn't have to go out in the hot fields and pick them ourselves. And guess what else?

They also sell blueberry plants here with blueberries already growing on them!

Mommie was so excited she bought 5 plants!! Mommie said they are only $5.00 per plant, and they even already have blueberries on them, so that is quite a good deal!

This blueberry farm is not too far from where we live, just down the road a ways.

I was really excited to be able to see the blueberries and the people who were going to go pick their own blueberries.

I think it would be fun to pick your own berries.

When we got home, Daddy went and got the shovel out of the shed, and he started digging holes to plant the blueberry plants right away.

Then Mommie went to the lumber store down the road and got some stakes to stick in the ground to help hold them up nice and straight.

Looky here! These are the blueberries we bought at the farm, already picked. They are so sweet and BIG and juicy! Mommie said they are much bigger than the ones you can buy at the grocery store, and oh, so fresh and sweet and good!

So Mommie asked Daddy and my brother Scott what they would like for her to bake with them.
They both said they would like a blueberry pie.

So Mommie got out her very old cookbook that she has had ever since they got married almost 52 years ago.

Here is the recipe for Blueberry Pie that she used:

Of course I helped her get it ready to put in the oven:

And 35 minutes later, here it is! It just came out of the oven while I was telling you this story!
It smells SO good!!

I want to eat some right now, but Mommie says we have to wait for it to cool. That juice is still bubbling hot and it would burn us if we tried to eat it now.

And so that was my big adventure for today!! That was a lot of fun!
And now we will be able to grow our own blueberries, and maybe next year we will have enough to bake a pie or two!!
(and Mommie said she might go back and buy some more blueberries now so we have some more for blueberry muffins and just to eat on our cheerios and stuff!)

(Did you see those Cheerios are shaped like little hearts? I thought that was really cute!)

Mommie said to remember our Bible Verse:

"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,
nothing will be impossible for you."
Matthew 17:20

And also did you see that pretty Easter Lily up above? It's still blooming since Easter!
And it reminds us again that Jesus is alive!

By the way...we found a street here in our neighborhood that has MY name!! Isn't that exciting?

Okay friends, that's my adventure for today.

I hope you are having some fun adventures too!

Bye Bye!

Love,

Lily Grace

(I have to go eat a piece of pie now if it has cooled down enough...
Wish you were here to have a piece too!)

  1. It all looks so yummy! Blue berry season isn't until late July here. My stepdad has several bushes and they really produce a LOT of berries. We pick and eat lots, but we also freeze a lot. That's a really easy way to keep them and then just grab a handful to put on your cereal or to make muffins or whatever. You can just toss them in a freezer bag or you can spread them on a cookie sheet to freeze then dump them in a bag. You can have them all winter that way!

    1. Good Morning Miss Stacy! Mommie wants to know if your stepdad has to cover the blueberry bushes to keep the birdies off of them? We are wondering if we need to do that. Yes, Mommie said she wants to go get more blueberries so she will have some to freeze. They sure are yummy. Hope you have a happy day. Love, Lily Grace

    1. Thank you, Miss Terri. Mommie says come right up and she will give you some pie! But you better hurry! It will be gone soon! But we hope our own blueberries will grow and then we can bake a lot of pies! And yes, I think I will eat some heart shaped Cheerios this morning with fresh blueberries on top! Have you ever seen a street with YOUR name on it? Mommie says there is a street near hear called "Pamela" street too! She said she will have to look for one with Terri on it and let you know if she finds one. Bye bye for now! Love, Lily Grace

  3. I wish I could have a piece, too! I don't really like most fruit, but blueberries are the exception. One summer my Minnesota grandparents took me picking and that night we had blueberries floating in a bath of fresh cream. 😋 These days I've had to forego the cream and stir the in my cottage cheese. It's all good!

PS - Seeing those Cheerios reminds me. Ask mommie if she remembers when, in the 60's, a cereal came out with actual little pieces of fruit freeze-dried. When you poured milk atop, they'd swell up, back to life. My dad thought that was the greatest thing ever.

    1. Cottage Cheese is good with all kinds of fruits, Mommie says. The pie was very good, but a bit too juicy. Mommie says those great big blueberries make a LOT of juice, so she may have to adjust her recipe somehow to thicken the juice more or something. Any ideas? Mommie said she doesn't remember any particular cereal from the 60's like that, but that she still gets the freeze dried apples in oatmeal w/apples and they do that. And of course, raisins in Raisin Bran do that too. Mommie said she mainly remembers Cheerios, Shredded Wheat, and Frosted Flakes. Lol! Bye bye for now!

  4. That is a fantastic adventure and a big yum too! When I loved in Ocala I had blackberries bushes planted all along the back of my property. I have never ever tasted blackberries like that before or after - so good! You should get some blackberry bushes too!

    1. Mommie said there are some wild blackberry bushes growing all around in the woods, but the birdies eat the berries before we can ever get to them. We hope they aren't going to eat our blueberries, so Mommie wants to get something to put over the bushes to keep the birds off of them. She said she loves blackberries too, and they make a wonderful cobbler.

  5. Oh, Miss Lily Grace, how exciting to have those new blueberry bushes right in your own yard! There is nothing like fresh blueberries that you pick yourself. My father planted blueberries for years, and those are the best I've ever tasted. And that pie? I wanted to crawl right into the photo and cut myself a slice! I bet it was delicious.
    Blessings, little one!

    1. Thank you Miss Martha Jane! I hope our bushes will grow lots and lots of berries for us to enjoy for years and years, just like your father did. Mommie wants to know, did he have to cover them with net to keep the birds off of them? And yes, the pie was delicious...just a bit too juicy. Mommie said those big blueberries make a lot more juice than the little ones apparently, but it was all good. Hope you have a blessed and happy day too. Love, Lily Grace.

    2. Yes, my father did cover his bushes with netting, and it really helped in keeping the birds out. Although, one time, a bird managed to find its way under the net, but couldn't get out! I had to rescue it, which took some doing!
      Blessings, Lily Grace!

  6. Oh my that pie looks so good. I like that old cookbook too. I think that one has the best cookie recipes in it. It will be fun growing your own blueberries. My hometown where I went to high school is famous for having a blueberry festival each June.

  7. OH Miss Sandy! Mommie wants to know if you know the best way to grow blueberry bushes and do you have to put netting over them to keep the birdies from eating the berries? Our new bushes have lots of berries on them already, but we don't want the birdies to eat them before they get ripe. What do YOU think? Should we cover them or not? Mommie said she has a lot to learn about growing blueberries and needs to study up on it. And yes, she agrees with you regarding the cookbook and cookies. That is the one she learned to cook with, since her mother also used the same cookbook. Lots of favorite recipes in there. Thank you for visiting. The pie was juicy, but very good. Love, Lily Grace.

  8. I LOVE U-Pick blueberries ... although we have to wait until June for berries to ripe. I haven't been since the kids were younger but I'm not sure why. Perhaps this year I will treat myself to a nostalgic experience (then come home and bake a pie to celebrate!) Thanks for the inspiration, Lily Grace!!

    1. Oh you are welcome, Miss Molly! I do hope you will go pick some blueberries and bake a pie! They are SO good fresh from the bush. We've been eating them as fast as we can because they are just so good. So now you have something to look forward to in June! Be sure to share it with us when you do! Bye bye for now! 1. OH Tracie, I've missed you so much! I was getting worried about you and wondering what happened. I am SO glad you are okay. Your Mommie told my Mommie about the little chicks getting bigger and moving into their own "mansion"! They must be a lot of fun to watch. And yes, we've had lots and lots of good blueberries...even on our own bushes that we planted. Mommie eats them as soon as they turn blue so the birds won't get them first! LOL. She said once the birds discover them we may never get another one! And yes, I love the Easter lily. Mommie said now that it is finished blooming for this year we can plant it in the ground and it will grow back and bloom again next year. So that is something I want to help Mommie do. I hope to hear all about your adventure soon. We just had another adventure and Mommie is going to help me write about it, so stay tuned for the "next adventure of Lily Grace". I miss you and hope we can see each other again soon. Yes, we would play and have SO much fun. And you can bring Amybelle too if she wants to come. I'd love to meet her. Ok, bye. I have to go now and write my next adventure. Love, Lily Grace
