Good Morning to all our friends in Bloggy Land! Mommie said today is "Friday Foto Friends" day, and since she didn't have anything particular to share, she said I could share some special pictures and a story today!
The other day when I was telling you about our Autumn decorations, there was one special "person" I really really loved:
Mr. Scarecrow!!
Mommie said that she had a book that tells a story about a scarecrow and some other special people. I asked her if we could read it together, and she said we could. Here is the book below. Perhaps you have heard of this story:
Yes! The Wizard of Oz! Mommie said there was a movie made about this story many years ago when she was a little girl, and they used to show it on TV at least once a year. Mommie said she was very young, and some parts of the story were very scary to her, and so she really wasn't too sure she liked it, but she watched it anyway because it had a happy ending. Do you have some stories like that that you like?
Anyway, Mommie has this book because a friend gave it to her when Mommie and Daddy were moving away to Kansas for a little while. This story takes place in Kansas, and Mommie's friend thought this book would be a good one to read if they were going to live in Kansas!
This is a picture from inside the book. Mommie said that the little girl Dorothy looks a lot like me!
And do you see, she has some interesting friends with her...a Tin Man, a Lion, and a SCARECROW! Oh, and we mustn't leave out her little doggie, "Toto".
I think most of you already know the story of how a big tornado came and picked up Dorothy's house where she lived with her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry and her doggy Toto. Dorothy and Toto were swirling around inside the house on top of the tornado, and it landed in the Land of Oz.
Along the way she met three wonderful new friends, The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Lion.
Of course we all know that she also met some evil people like witches and other creatures who tried to stop them from getting to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz.
I won't retell the whole story here, but you know how the Scarecrow wanted some brains so he could be smart and think, and the Tin Woodman wanted a heart, and the Lion wanted courage. And of course Dorothy just wanted to go back home to Kansas.
In the book (which was written in 1900, by the way!), the famous Ruby Slippers from the movie were actually silver shoes, and the Good Witch Glinda from the south sat on a throne of rubies. And the Good Witch Glinda tells Dorothy that if she had known the power of her Silver Shoes she could have gone back to her Auntie Em the very first day she came to this country.
But the Scarecrow said if Dorothy had not come and they had not gone on that journey together he would never have had his wonderful brains.
And the Tin Woodman said that he would not have his lovely heart.
And the Lion said he would have lived a coward forever.
And then the Good Witch Glinda told Dorothy to just knock the heels together three times and command the shoes to carry her wherever she wanted to go....
And so she bid farewell to her dear beloved friends, and then clapped the heels of her shoes together three times and the next thing she knew she was back home in Kansas with her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry.
We all remember Dorothy saying in the movie:
"There's no place like home, There's no place like home, There's no place like home..."
Wow! What an amazing story!
Well, Mommie had a little surprise for me after we finished reading the story. Look at these beautiful little Ruby Slippers and the story that came along with them! Mommie said that same special friend gave this to her when she moved to Kansas, with a prayer also that someday she would come back home, which she did, but that's another long story for another time:
"The Red Shoes are leading me home...to heaven, for these shoes symbolize my walk with Jesus. They are red because I've been cleansed by His blood. Jesus wants to walk with you too!"
"Red for the blood of Jesus my sins are washed away,
so every step I now take God will lead the way."
I love these little Ruby Slippers, and the beautiful story about Jesus taking me home to heaven someday. I asked Mommie if I could wear them for a while, and she said I could as long as I told this story to you and also as long as I took good care of them.
I hope you enjoyed this little story time today. I don't have a real Tin Woodman, or a Lion, or even a little doggy like Toto, but these are some of my friends, and we all enjoyed this story very much.
I hope you have a happy and blessed day, wherever you are!!
And I hope you have these special red shoes to take you home to heaven too.
Wizard of Oz scared me as a child too, and I loved the ending also. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHello Miss Cathy! Mommie said it's funny that she still doesn't really like to watch that movie because of how it made her feel when she was little, even though now she knows that God is bigger than all those bad witches and creatures and she need not be afraid. She said whenever I feel afraid I just need to pray to Jesus and He will help me. So that's what I do. Thank you for visiting today. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxxo
DeleteThe Wizard of Oz is one of my all-time favorite movies, Miss Lily Grace, and I'm so glad Mommie told you the story. As many times as I've seen this movie, I loved hearing it retold here. I must tell you, that of all the scary things in this movie, the tornado frightened me the most. For years as a child and into adulthood, I would have nightmares about these storms, and when we were under a tornado watch/warning, I'd be the first one down in the basement! Thank goodness I no longer have those awful dreams. And when I'm feeling frightened or upset, I go to God in prayer, and He always calms me down. I know Mommie tells you to do the same, little one.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Oh yes, Miss Martha Jane! Mommie has taught me to pray whenever I am afraid, and Jesus always calms my fears and helps me not be so afraid. Mommie said she didn't like the bad witches and some of the other scary creatures in the story when she was little. But she said they don't scare her anymore because she knows God is bigger than all those bad things and we don't have to be afraid. Thank you for telling me your story too, Miss Martha Jane. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo
DeleteOh Lily, this makes me want to watch The Wizard of Oz all over again! What thoughtful gifts, given your mommie when they moved to Kansas! I was so taken by those tiny red shoes I went to their website. (Was thinking they would make great Christmas presents for the ladies in my Bible study ... but alas, not at $20/each.)
ReplyDeleteIndeed, there's no place like home!
Have a beautiful day, little friend!
Wow, really, Miss Myra? $20.00 each? Mommie didn't know that either! Now she said I have to really take good care of them because that's a lot of money! It's been over 20 years ago that Mommie was given these, so they probably didn't cost that much then, but I bet it was still a lot for way back then! But the meaning is so nice, don't you think? Yes, there is no place like home for sure. Thank you. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo
DeleteLily Grace: You told a wonderful story. Our son moved to Kansas in 2011. People there are nice. They do thins to remind visitors of the story of Dorothy and her adventure. I walked into a store looking for tee shirts and found the evil witch's legs laying on the floor up against a shelving unit. I believe they did it to draw attention to the items. Our son moved back to Indiana in 2015. Were you aware that the state flower there is the Sunflower? Peace and blessings to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteOh Miss Quiet Spirit! We did not know that your son used to live in Kansas. Yes, the story of the Wizard of Oz is very popular there. And yes, Mommie said she knew that the sunflower was their state flower. Her friend also gave her some dinner plates with sunflowers on them when they moved there, and she still uses them for breakfast plates! Thank you for visiting today. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo
DeleteI needed to "hear" your sweet words today, Lily Grace! Thank you for sharing about your Mommie, who is a very special person who brings much joy through her blogs. I didn't know she had lived in Kansas before! You have to be pretty tough to live in Kansas and those other "frontier" states! I love the meaning of the red shoes as represented by the brooch - yes, the only path home is by the Blood and Body, Soul and Divinity of Christ Jesus!
ReplyDeleteThank you Miss Holly! I am so glad you came by to visit us today. Mommie and I always enjoy hearing from you. Mommie said to tell you she didn't live in Kansas for very long. The job they went there for didn't really work out and they were not very happy there, so they went back "home", which at THAT time was New Hampshire, where my big brothers were living. And yes, the "red shoes" helped her to get back home, and will also help her stay on the right path to her heavenly home, where Jesus is waiting for us all someday. Won't it be wonderful there? Much better than the Land of Oz, that's for sure! And Jesus is the ONLY way to get there...no yellow brick road will take us there...only Jesus and His shed blood can take us there. I'm so happy Mommie and Daddy shared that with me, and I'm glad you know that too. God bless you Miss Holly. Talk to you again soon. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo
DeleteThe Wizard of Oz is one of my very favorite stories! When I was little, I even missed a birthday party once so I could stay home and watch The Wizard of Oz on TV. I still watch it whenever I see that it is on. I'm glad you and your friends liked it too!! Have a fun weekend, Lily Grace! xo
ReplyDeleteOh My, Miss Terri! You really did like The Wizard of Oz when you were little!! I can't imagine missing a birthday party to watch it on TV! Ha Ha! Mommie says you must have been a lot braver than she was as a little girl, because she used to be so scared of it and she said it made her very anxious and she still gets that way when she watches it now, although she said she hasn't seen it in a very long time. Maybe now if we watch it together she will like it better. Maybe if YOU watched it with her she wouldn't have been so scared. But she said now she knows those bad witches and creatures aren't really real and because she knows Jesus she's not afraid anymore. Thank you for visiting with me today. I hope you have a fun weekend too! Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxoxoxo
DeleteHi there my bestest friend and fun identical twin cousin!! I had fun looking at these pictures and seeing all the fun Fall stuff. Tansy has been telling me all about it...this is our very FIRST FALL, so it's special to us, right? I don't know about ANY OF THIS STUFF, ha ha, Tansy is teaching me. I like the pretty Fall things and Mommie told me about "punkins" and now scareycrows ("SCARECROWS!!" HOLLERS Tansy from the other room). Me and Amybelle helped Mommie put up Fall decorations today on the fireplace mantel and that was fun. There were lots and lots of sunflowers and big red mums and some pretty leaves too, and Fall "punkin" teapots and we put flowers into them. Mommie said in the "old days" when she was a little girl they went on hayrides in the Fall and sang songs and had hot dog roasts on fires. I liked the wizard of oz book and mommie said she will read it to us soon and that I will like the ruby slippers, and that is what the pretty pin is you are wearing. Hugs, Love,Tracie
ReplyDeleteOh Tracie! I wish we could do all those fun things together, like hayrides and hot dog roasts and s'mores! Don't forget the s'mores, which is made with a toasted marshmallow (over the fire) and then you put it on a graham cracker with a square of hershey's chocolate bar on it! Doesn't that sound wonderful? My mommie said she used to do those all the time when she was a Girl Scout, and also when she got be a big girl too! Oh, I am happy your Mommie will read to you the Wizard of Oz book. It has some scary parts, but when we have Jesus in our hearts we don't have to be scared, because He is always with us and will protect us from the bad witches and people and stuff. And the Ruby Slippers will help us stay on the right road to heaven, which is even better than the yellow brick road to the Emerald city! I am glad you are decorating your house for fall too. I hope you and your Mommie will take some pictures and show us!! Have a fun weekend. I love you. Love, Lily Grace xoxoxoxo
DeleteHappy birthday to your Mommie!! Love, Tracie tansy and amybelle!!! Doll hugs!!!
